What is Tailscale?
Tailscale is a secure, easy-to-use solution that allows you to connect to company resources from anywhere. It uses end-to-end encryption to protect your data and creates a private network between your devices, making remote access seamless and secure.
Key Features:
• Automatic Connectivity: Once set up, Tailscale connects automatically without requiring manual login.
• Zero Configuration: No need for complex setup—all of the configuration is handled remotely.
• Security: All traffic is encrypted, ensuring secure communication.
Using Tailscale: A Quick Guide
Toggling Tailscale On/Off
• How to Toggle:
• Locate the Tailscale icon in your menu bar at the top of the screen
• Use the toggle button to enable or disable Tailscale.
Important Note:
• Your organisation may restrict the ability to disable Tailscale for security reasons. If you cannot toggle it off, this is by design to ensure consistent protection and is expected behaviour.
Connecting to Tailscale
• Tailscale should be automatically enabled and connected via your organisation’s system.
To check if you are connected, go to the menu bar and look for this. You should see that your status is 'connected' and you have an exit node automatically selected.
Using Tailscale, we can take advantage of a feature called Exit Node's also known as Secure Virtual Private Routers or VPR's for short.
Secure Virtual Private Routing (VPR)
1. What is a Secure VPR?
• It is a feature that determines whether your internet traffic uses Tailscale’s private network or goes directly to the public internet.
You would use a VPR to access company data. Your company data is restricted behind a feature called 'IP Allow-listing'. What that means is that only certain trusted IP addresses can access company information. So if an individual were to try and access that data without this feature, they would be blocked from doing so.
2. Toggling the VPR On and Off
• Open the Tailscale App from the Menu Bar.
• Navigate to the 'Exit Nodes' Section.
• Select the 'Recommended' option if you have more than one, otherwise, choose the only option.
Troubleshooting Tailscale
By default, Tailscale is designed to open and run every time you log in to your device, however, this may not always happen.
What can you try in the event that Tailscale doesn't launch automatically?
Useful Tips
• Stay Connected: Ensure Tailscale is running, especially when accessing sensitive or internal resources.
• Stay Secure: Avoid public Wi-Fi networks without Tailscale enabled to protect sensitive information.
